Why dentist do Nerve Lateralization before implant?

Some patients have their mandibular nerve positioned very high in their jaw bone. The inter-arch vertical distance between the top of the crest of their mandibular jaw bone and their upper teeth is very limited. That inter-arch vertical distance is very necessary to allow room to put proper prosthetic on top of the implants, which will be placed in the mandible.

Nerve Lateralization, also known as Percutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation (or Photo refractive Activator Application [PET]-Assisted Stimulation therapy], is a non-surgical procedure that treats pain and dysfunction in the Posterior Mandibular Joint [PMJ] by using a computer-guided heat energy source and light with pulsed light or heat energy pulses.

Where does the mandibular nerve exist in the body?
